Belonging to the state of Kentucky, the little town of Kuttawa is present in the Lyon County. It has a population of 649, according to the 2010 U.S. Census and has a total area of 2.6 square miles of which 0.7 square miles is water. The town was founded in 1866 by Charles Anderson, the former governor of Ohio, who purchased the land.
The name was originally spelled as Cuttawa and Kittawa and was derived from a Cherokee Village that existed near the area. The formal incorporation of the town in the State Assembly took place in 1872. The town had to be moved to another area in the 1960s when the construction of the dam across the Cumberland River was to form Lake Barkley.
Newcomers and visitors can enjoy visiting the old site of Kuttawa during the winters when the depth of Lake Barkley reduces by 5 feet or more. It gives them a view of the original site's streets and roads which would be intriguing to see. A trip to the city is incomplete without visiting the Kuttawa Marina Harbor. Regular visitors highly recommend it since it continues to expand and provide entertainment to guests during the summer. The climate of Kuttawa is described as humid subtropical due to its presence in the southern region. Common features of the climate include warm climate with the summers being exceptionally hot, reaching temperatures of around 90F. However, there's plenty of rainfall to balance out those sunny days.
